What are the Symptoms of Prostate TURP?

Certain problems may arise with the prostate gland and may lead to other serious illnesses. How will you identify if you have problems with your prostate gland? The following signs may indicate problems with the prostate gland:

  • Frequent urination
  • Blood in with the urine or semen
  • Pain during ejaculation
  • A burning sensation while urinating
  • Not being able to urinate

If you experience any of these issues, you should consult a medical practitioner as soon as possible.

What is Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia?

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia is a condition when the prostate grows abnormally. It has an immediate effect on urinary function. The normal urinary function may deteriorate or even stop, leading to issues such as bladder stones and kidney problems. BPH is not considered a precursor to prostate cancer.
BPH cannot be cured fully. It is a chronic ailment whose treatment is focused on symptom reduction. Medication and therapy are prescribed based on the severity of the condition.

What is BPH Surgeries?

Surgeries are the last retort for a BPH patient when medication or home remedies do not work. There are three main surgeries for prostate enlargement. They are:

  • Radical prostatectomy
  • Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP)
  • Pelvic Lymphadenectomy
A relatively new method of surgery known as Prostate Artery Embolization (PAE) is also used.
The side effects and indications of prostate disease might include:
  • Frequent urination
  • Weak or interrupted urine stream
  • The need to strain during urination
  • The urge to pee in the evenings
  • Blood in the pee
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Pain or burning sensation during urination
  • Pain when sitting
Other noncancerous states of the prostate, such as BPH or an enlarged prostate, can cause side effects. Urinary symptoms can be due to a disease of the bladder or other conditions.
If there is malignant growth outside of the prostate organ, symptoms might include:
  • Pain in the back, hips, thighs, shoulders, or bones
  • Liquid in the legs or feet
  • Unexplained weight reduction
  • Weakness
  • ● Change in gut propensities
What is Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP)?

TURP is performed in two ways – Monopolar TURP and Bipolar TURP. They are referred to as M-TURP and B-TURP. TURP is done using a device called a resectoscope. It is a thin metal tube fitted with a light, a camera, and a loop of wire. It is inserted through your urethra until it reaches the prostate. So the surgery requires no cuts or incisions.

Monopolar TURP or conventional TURP removes tissue with a wire loop that has electrical current flowing in one direction (monopolar) through the resectoscope to cut the tissue. The site is usually irrigated with a nonconducting fluid so that the other tissues surrounding it do not get damaged. The whole surgical process of TURP has to be done within a specific time because prolonged exposure results in TUR syndrome. TUR stands for transurethral resection syndrome. It is caused by electrolyte-free irrigating fluids. It consists of symptoms affecting the nervous and circulatory systems.

But how successful is the TURP process? TURP is an effective process. The success rate among otherwise fit patients is 80-90%. It requires three to six weeks to recover from this surgery. Your surgeon will advise you about when you can resume your routine.

What are the Risks Associated with TURP?

There are several risks. For a few days after TURP surgery, the patient may feel difficulty in emptying his bladder. Patients also feel the sudden urge to urinate. The prostate can grow back after TURP. About 75% of the patients who underwent TURP surgery experienced prostate enlargement after five to ten years.
